Screen Report 2 : It Happened 1 Night

1) By the end of 1928, the world was finally getting used to movies with sound to accompany them. Silent films were no longer the trend since sound became available. By 1929 silent films were complete history. Although films with sound were the new trend, there was still major issues with the sound production. Some problems with early sound were limited mobility, microphone placement, sound quality, and mixing.  It Happened 1 Night had flawless sound production for being made in 1934, at the early stage of the sound era.

2) NY Times movie reviews created an amazing article on many attributes of the wonderful film It Happened 1 Night. NY times states, ""It Happened One Night" is a good piece of fiction, which, with all its feverish stunts, is blessed with bright dialogue and a good quota of relatively restrained scenes." For someone who knows the background information on this movie, they would know that this movie was created in the very early era of sound. Sound was still a fresh new aspect to audiences but yet they were spoiled with an amazing script provided by the writers of this film. The film makes it seem as if dialogue has been in movies for decades.

3) This article helped me remind myself some of the thoughts I had about sound and dialogue while watching the film. I couldn't get over the fact that I thought the script was absolutely brilliant. The jokes and wittiness presented in the film were still highly laughable 80 years later. I would claim this as a timeless movie. It is the type of movie that will get laughs and tears no matter what decade or generation it is being presented.

4) Before watching this film, I had no prior acknowledgement on it. After watching the film, I would easily proclaim it as one of the most influential films in history. I believe this film made a pathway for endless romantic films in Hollywood throughout the decades. If it wasn’t for this film, some of our favorite romantic comedies would have never been made. While watching this film it reminded me so much of one of my favorite films Breakfast At Tiffanys. It is a comedy for all and a love story intertwined. It happened 1 Night made movies like those possible.

screen report 1: Gold Rush

1) Gold Rush had a substantial amount of relations to class discussions and to the text that were obvious throughout the duration of the film. In the text, it states that Charlie improvisation and rehearsal were techniques that made his performances more vivid and funny. These were two aspects at the time that most actors did not practice. It is clear in Gold Rush that Chaplin may have rehearsed many scenes more than once so the scenes could be perfect. The film explored many different pathos including hunger, cruel rejection, ridicule and work ethic. These pathos help capture the audience's sympathy for the characters.

2) It is told by an article from NY Times that Chaplin was able to depict such a believable role in Gold Rush simply because he himself has been through similar situations throughout his lifetime. While back at the beginning of his life in London he was faced with many hungry days and disappointments. The article states that with the background Chaplin was able to provide, depicting a character such as the Lone Prospector was a fairly easy task to do. Throughout the movie you tend to forget how ridiculous the situations may actually be since Chaplin plays such a convincing role.

3) The particle article I found made me realize what a talented actor Charlie Chaplin actually is. He was far more advanced compared to other actors of his time. He had techniques and skills that helped him portray his characters exactly the way the director wanted it to be portrayed. Chaplin's life experiences helped him relate to  the same life experiences that his character was going through although they may have been on a much broader spectrum.

4) From the moment we began watching Gold Rush in class, I was immediately mesmerized. For me, I think everything about the movie was so unique that I simply couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Being able to see how movies first started out is such a treat and a honor to be able to compare them to todays array of movies. Before watching Gold Rush, the thought of a silent film put me straight to sleep. But after watching this amazing contribution to film history I am anxious to see if Gold Rush set a high bar for silent films.
